Meet the Folk

About me

My name is Judy Higgins and I live in Chicago, Illinois. I play fiddle and write tunes for The Wren & The Whistler. The band made our debut at the 2011 Midwest Fiddle Championship, where we received an Honorable Mention. In 2013 we took First Prize in the Team Division. Each summer, we go on the Ice Cream Tour, where we play at ice cream parlors throughout the Midwest.

In 2011, I co-founded Chicago’s Old Time Jamboree, an open stage event dedicated celebrating the joy of old time music. What began as a twice-yearly event now has a monthly home at The Grafton Pub in Lincoln Square.

In March 2014, I received and Illinois Arts Council Master/Apprentice Grant with Paul Tyler.

I lead some string jams and am part of the awesome community at the Old Town School of Folk Music.

The first time I played violin was in fourth grade. I played for one year, but I don’t remember much about it. One day I realized that if I had never quit playing violin, I would be really good by now. So I called the Old Town School and signed up for Fiddle 1.

About this site

I started this site in 2008 during my first week of class. I posted videos from that first 8-week session so that I would have a record of my progress from the very beginning. I’m still growing and learning, and my goal with this site is to share some of my experiences and insights along the way.
